Our progress

HPIM0492.JPGPromise Academy believes in routinely evaluating each child so that he or she can grow at an optimum pace. Kindergarten students take the Brigance Diagnostic Comprehensive Inventory of Basic Skills three times each year. By administering the test in the fall, winter, and spring, teachers are able to target specific interventions to meet each kindergarteners needs.

Beginning in first grade, students take ThinkLink - a computerized evaluation that helps optimize learning by targeting strengths and weaknesses of every student. ThinkLink is administered in the fall and spring of each school year. In addition, students take the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) to ensure that Promise Academy is meeting or exceeding the achievement standards outlined by No Child Left Behind legislation and the state of Tennessee.

Evaluation allows teachers to pinpoint academic needs and provide remedial or accelerated interventions for students. Promise Academy currently offers three supplemental reading groups in kindergarten and first grade helping students achieve at the same rate as their peers. Additional one on one tutoring opportunities in reading and mathematics are provided as needed by volunteers.

Opportunities for acceleration are also available at Promise Academy. Kindergarten students conduct in depth investigations of dinosaurs and Egypt. First graders study the human body and rain forests.

All students have opportunities to advance their academic skills using the Leap Track Assessment system. Each classroom has access to this learning system that evaluates student skills and designs individualized programs to help students grow academically.

Accelerated Reader is a research based program that is also used as an incentive to help students grow in reading. Beginning in first grade, students read books that are within a range designed to optimize reading growth. Students accumulate reading points by taking quizzes on the books they have read. Points may be redeemed for prizes.
